Working with the Sudanese diaspora in the U.S.
The Foundation organized a meeting in Washington, D.C. to connect with other groups and organizations that work to serve the Sudanese diaspora.
As can be seen in Valentino's life, even with support networks, it's very difficult for Sudanese in America to attain college educations. Valentino experienced so many obstacles in his pursuit of admission into a four-year college. Though he received full secondary education at Kakuma refugee camp, American colleges did not accept his transcript from that school. After many years of struggle, hard work, and dedication -- taking part-time community college courses in Atlanta while working multiple jobs -- Valentino finally realized his dream and was admitted into Allegheny College, a small liberal arts school in Meadville, Pennsylvania. But his experience is an exception to the norm among resettled Sudanese in the United States.

Many difficulties face the Sudanese-American community, and access to education is foremost among them. The Valentino Achak Deng Foundation will help provide scholarships to aid the educational pursuits of Sudanese-Americans by supporting community organizations and educational institutions that work with members of the Sudanese diaspora. Plans are underway to make grants to American colleges and universities for scholarship funds that will assist Sudanese students enrolled in degree programs. Grants will also be made to community organizations that assist Sudanese refugees during the difficult transition period in the United States.
