Valentino at International Rescue Committee event

On October 15, Valentino and Dave Eggers will speak at the International Rescue Committee’s Fifth Annual Bay Area Dinner in San Francisco, benefiting the IRC’s global efforts to help refugees.

The event will be hosted by Nick Clooney, journalist and father of George Clooney, and will feature the presentation of the 2007 Sarlo Foundation Distinguished Humanitarian Service Awards. The Sarlo awards honor five exemplary IRC humanitarian workers for their extraordinary dedication and sacrifice on behalf of refugees, the displaced, and other victims of oppression or violent conflict. This year’s award recipients have served IRC efforts in places such as Darfur, Afghanistan, and Northern Caucasus.

The IRC works with over 2.2 million people throughout Sudan, and has helped respond to conflicts in the region since 1981. They are actively involved in Darfur relief efforts as well as post-conflict relief and recovery in southern Sudan, where they help southern Sudanese return to their homes. The IRC’s long-term goal is to improve the Sudanese people’s ability to exercise their fundamental rights, access basic services and manage their own livelihoods. At the event in San Francisco, Valentino will speak about the importance of the IRC in his life, during his time at Kakuma Refugee Camp in Northwest Kenya and after his resettlement to Atlanta, Georgia.
