Now that the Marial Bai Secondary School is open, we need your help to keep it running and to expand the campus of the educational center.
We recently kicked off a fundraising campaign to raise money for the Marial Bai Secondary School. Across the country, small fundraisers have been organized to help support the school.
Hosting your own fundraiser is easy! The first step is email us at info@valentinoachakdeng.org. Here are a few ideas:
Host a party for Sudan. We’ll send you a DVD about Valentino’s school and some fundraising materials; all you have to do is gather your friends, family, or colleagues at your home, church, school, a local bar, or anywhere you’d like.
Get your school involved. Teach a unit about Sudan, screen our DVD, hold a pledge drive, or run a campaign to provide the Marial Bai Secondary School with laptops or books or school supplies. Your school could even adopt Valentino’s school as a sister school.
Create your own fundraiser. Whether a bake sale, school event, craft fair, walkathon, or donation box at a local business, restaurant, or school—anything helps to raise awareness about Sudan and help generate support for the Marial Bai Secondary School.
Here are some examples of previous fundraising efforts by Valentino’s supporters
Examples of house party fundraisers:
Colleen and Jon-Mark Chappellet, who own a winery in Napa, CA, encouraged all their friends to read What Is the What, then organized a wine-and-cheese house benefit that raised more than $10,000 for Valentino’s school in Sudan.
Ashley Plocha, student at John S. Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School in Augusta, GA, planned a benefit concert with local band My Instant Lunch.
Yumi Sakugawa of Los Angeles, CA held her holiday birthday party as a benefit for the Foundation.
For her 16th birthday party, Katie Skelly asked her friends to bring donations instead of gifts. At the party, she screened the Foundation’s DVD for all the party-goers and raised more than $1000 for our students in Sudan.
Katherine Myers of Boulder, CO held a tea party at her home, raising over $500.
Examples of sports benefits—runs, walks, & rides:
Howard Lurie of Boston ran a marathon in Vermont to support the Marial Bai Secondary School, raising over $1200!
Gail Riebeling, a retired public school principal, walked 500 miles across Northern Spain and asked friends and family to donate 1 cent per mile for VADF.
Colin Casey and Max Magnuson, students at Stanford University, are commemorating the journey of the Sudanese Lost Boys by setting out on a journey of their own this summer: A 3,000 mile, 45 day cross-country bike ride to raise awareness and money for the Foundation. They have been officially sponsored by the Apple store and have already raised over $13,000!
Examples of fundraisers by book clubs, schools, et al:
Malaquias Montoya, author of Globalization and War—The Aftermath, is generously donating 15% from every book sold to the Foundation.
The Critical Writing class at Roger Williams University, taught by Alice Cross, “wanted to do something besides learn about the world” and made a donation to the Marial Bai Secondary School.
Jonathan Fine, author of A Refugee in Sudan, is generously donating $2 from every book sold to Valentino’s school in Sudan.
Deven Christopher of Florida created an interactive website to inspire the act of giving, which features the Marial Bai Secondary School.
The Page Turners Book Club in Baltimore, Maryland who “were inspired to give after reading Dave’s book” donated more than $450 to the Foundation.
Wise Women Book Club in St. Louis, Missouri raised $100 for VADF.
Jeremy Kemp, founder of a Foreign Language school in Northern Italy, has encouraged his students “to help others to learn as they are learning” by donating to VADF.
Students at St. Lawrence University in Ontario hosted a silent auction event that raised over $3,000 to support the construction of the Marial Bai Secondary School.
