New country, new challenges
The 2nd semester at MBSS begins on August 22, but the cost of food, building materials, school supplies, and fuel in South Sudan has nearly tripled in recent months — we need your help!
Here are some of our more urgent projects:
- A water well: there is currently one water well (borehole) at the Marial Bai Secondary School. This well provides water for cooking and bathing for the whole student body and is often used by the community as well. We plan to build a secondary well near the girls’ dormitory to add privacy and to make it easier for these young women to collect water.
- Nutrition program: due to blockades along the northern border, climate change and other factors, the cost of food in the region has skyrocketed. The Foundation provides three meals daily to our students & the program is now facing unprecedented levels of added expense.
- Girls’ hygiene: the Foundation supplies all of our girl students with sanitary napkins. As girls’ enrollment continues to grow, we will need to increase our stock of feminine hygiene products.
- Faculty office: teachers at MBSS are currently using one of the classrooms as an office until we can build a dedicated work space for the faculty. Next year, when the school is at full capacity, we will need all available classrooms for our students.
- A security fence: we currently have two watchmen guarding the school’s property. As our student boarding program expands, a security fence will help ensure the safety of our students and property.
- A science lab: the MBSS has state-of-the-art science equipment currently housed in a regular classroom. An additional laboratory space would allow us to expand our science program and to use the classroom for other core academic courses.
